This month we are excited to announce a special program:

Embracing Disability Through the Lens of Empowerment and Inclusivity

Disability is often associated with shame and inability. My hope today is to enlighten and modify perceptions. Our conversation will focus on how we as professionals in the business of training and developing people can approach disability and people with disabilities in a more empathetic, empowering, and positive light. We’ll take a practical look at how to intentionally recognize and acknowledge a person’s individual needs while navigating common workplace scenarios. With an emphasis on universal design, we will explore how to make our spaces more inclusive and equitable for all participants while creating a space of belonging for people with disabilities.

Michael Hicks, M.S.Ed.

About Michael Hicks:

Michael has nearly 20 years of experience working with people with disabilities in a variety of educational and healthcare settings, including clinical and vocational support to clients who are navigating physical limitations, mental health issues, learning disabilities, and addiction. He currently serves as the primary point of contact for faculty and staff at Columbus State Community College (CSCC) in the administration of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Michael believes knowledge and advocacy are the paths to equity and inclusion, and he is deeply immersed in numerous DEI initiatives at CSCC.

About the Diversity and Inclusion SIG:

We provide a forum for COATD members to gain knowledge, learn about best practices, and share resources with one another. In addition, this forum will champion the efforts around diversity, equity, and inclusion for talent development professionals to embrace our multicultural workforce.

Tip: Consider blocking your calendar throughout the year by registering for all 5 meetings now. This way you are more likely to attend.
